Türkiye and the UfM held the 3rd meeting of the Antalya Mediterranean Climate Dialogue in France.

Turkey—holding the presidency of the 31st Conference of the Parties (COP31) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change—and the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) held the third national consultation meeting of the Antalya Mediterranean Climate Dialogue at the Embassy in Paris. Topics such as energy transition and oceans and seas were addressed during the meeting.

According to a statement by the UfM, the Antalya Mediterranean Dialogue initiative—conducted through the cooperation of the UfM Secretariat and Türkiye in its capacity as the “host country”—aims to identify the Mediterranean’s priority issues ahead of the summit.

The outcomes of the consultation meetings held as part of this initiative—which aims to foster stronger regional convergence ahead of COP31—will be presented at the conference in Antalya in November.

The event was organized in cooperation with the French government and hosted by Türkiye’s Ambassador to Paris, Yunus Demirer, and UfM Senior Deputy Secretary General Mariam Diallo.

At a meeting where key French climate stakeholders gathered around three thematic roundtables aligned with the COP31 working agenda, topics such as the energy transition, the Rio Conventions, and oceans and seas were addressed.

The Mediterranean does not need to be convinced that climate change is urgent.

In her speech there, Ambassador Demirer stated, “We believe that COP31 offers a unique opportunity to strengthen the Mediterranean dimension of global climate action,” adding that they aim for COP31 to leave a lasting legacy for the Mediterranean by bolstering regional cooperation and ensuring the implementation of concrete measures in the region.

UfM Senior Deputy Secretary General Diallo stated that the Mediterranean is at a crossroads, noting, “The Mediterranean does not need to be convinced of the urgency of climate change.” Diallo highlighted the need for stronger, implementation-oriented regional cooperation.

Benoit Faraco, France’s Ambassador for Climate Negotiations, stated that the Mediterranean is a region deeply feeling the full impact of climate change.

Nadia Hai, France’s Ambassador for the Mediterranean, also stated that Türkiye—which has assumed the COP31 presidency—needs to develop a regional approach to climate issues in the Mediterranean through the Antalya Mediterranean Climate Dialogue.

As part of the initiative, consultations will also be held next week in Madrid, Rome, Amman, and Algiers.
